Set in the scenic Shenandoah Valley near the friendly town of Luray, Virginia, the 21st Annual Luray Triathlon offers a fun-filled, challenging multi-sport weekend. The Luray Triathlon is a partnership with the Town of Luray and Page County, Virginia. NEW for 2026, both the Sprint & Olympic races will be held on same day - Aug 16, 2026.

​AGE REQUIREMENT 

Sprint - must be 14 years of age and older

Olympic - must be 14 years of age and older

Participants will compete based on their race age. Your race age for the 2026 season is determined by your age on December 31st, 2026.

PARKING

All athletes will be directed to park (Lot A) near the lake. The upper lot (Lot B) will be reserved for handicapped parking and overflow from lot A. See Venue Map for location of parking area.

 

Please note: If you need to leave before the last finisher, you will be directed from lot A up through lot B, where you must make a left turn on Lake Arrowhead Rd to avoid driving on the course for athlete safety. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

ATHLETE CHECK-IN

Per USAT rules, each participant MUST pick up his/her own packet in person. If you do not check in during the designated check-in times in person, you will not be able to participate in the event. All participants 18 years and older must bring a valid photo I.D. to athlete check in. NO PHOTO ID = NO RACE!!! If you are under 18 without a photo ID, your parent or guardian may show their photo ID.

 

Athlete Check-In will be at (please attend one of the following):

  • Saturday, Aug 15 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Lake Arrowhead Park. 

  • Sunday, Aug 16 from 5:45 AM to 7:45 AM at Lake Arrowhead Park.

PRE-RACE COURSE TALK (optional)

Please consider attending the scheduled athlete meeting, which will provide important information about the race, and include a question and answer segment. If you are a first timer– attending a pre-race course talk is recommended!

YOUR RACE PACKET WILL INCLUDE:

WRISTBAND

A unique wristband will be given to participants at athlete check-in. Participants must wear this wrist band at all times on race day. This wristband must remain on until you have removed your bike from transition after the race. This band will identify you as an official participant and allows you access to the transition area. You will not be allowed into the transition area without this band in place.

 

BIKE ADHESIVE NUMBER

At athlete check-in, you will be given an adhesive bike number. Your bike must have an adhesive number on to rack on race morning.

TIMING

At athlete check in, you will be given a ankle chip timing. Athletes must wear their ankle chip at all times during this event. Should you forget your timing chip or loose it during the race, please let race management know so that we can give you another timing chip. Relay teams must transfer timing chips between teammates in the transition area.

 

RACE BIBS

Participants must wear their race bib on the run course at all times. Athletes can either pin their race bib to their shirt or wear it attached to a race belt. Relay teams must transfer bibs between teammates in the transition area. Athletes are required to wear their bib on their front side when going in and out of transition and crossing the finish line.

TRANSITION AREA

You must be wearing the unique athlete wristband to enter the transition area. Your bike number adhesive must be placed on your bike as well. Please be sure to bring along items received at check-in including race numbers (bib & bike adhesive number), as well as your bike, helmet and other personal gear.  Body marking will take place in the transition area prior to the start of the race. It is the athlete’s responsibility to ensure that volunteers mark their age as of December 31, 2026, which corresponds to the age division in which the athlete will compete. Please do not apply sunscreen, oil, Vaseline or lotion until AFTER you have been body marked. 

Race Bike Racking & Transition Area Protocol  

All bikes will be racked on race day only. To enter the transition area, athletes must wear the security wristband received at athlete check-in. The transition area is RESTRICTED TO ATHLETES ONLY**.

Use your mobile phone and go to the RESULTS page and click on Luray Triathlon results. On the results web page, enter your bib number or name to view your individual or team results.

Adult awards will be given to following categories. Awards will NOT be mailed to participants. Friends of runners may accept an award on your behalf.

In-person registration is available at packet pick up on Saturday, Aug 15 and Sunday, Aug 16. Registration transfers are not permitted to other RIVAL events. Race organizers reserve the right to close registration due to capacity limits. Race organizers reserve the right to delay or cancel event due to extreme weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. Pets, baby joggers/strollers, in-line skates, bicycles, and any other non-official wheeled vehicles are prohibited.

RACE SWAG 

Registration fee for both Adult and Youth race includes a short sleeve shirt and finisher medal.

TRIATHLON AND AQUABIKE START

Athletes will be called onto the starting line (inflatable arch at swim start) by assigned wave number. Each wave will walk/run into the water when prompted to begin. You must wear your designated swim cap color and start in your designated swim wave.

Triathlon Relay Teams - Athletes who are participating in a relay may remain in the transition area to wait for their swimmer to exit the water. Athletes will exchange race bib and timing chip with their partner in the transition area only. Only one team member is allowed on the course at any given time. Only one team member may start the race and cross the finish line.
 

WETSUIT POLICY

Water temperatures for the Luray Triathlon have ranged from 76–83F. The official water temperature, to determine wetsuit eligibility, will be taken on race morning, 60-90 minutes prior to race start.

USAT Wetsuit Temperature Policy:

  • 78 F or below - wetsuits ARE allowed.

  • 78.1 F to 83.9 F - participants may wear a wetsuit at their own discretion; however, wearing a wetsuit in this temperature range will mean that an athlete is ineligible for awards.

  • 84 F and above: wetsuits are NOT permitted—this is for your own safety.


DUATHLON START

Both the Sprint & Olympic races will start on the main park road near the porta-potties at 8:09 AM. Click HERE to view the venue map and start location. 

Leg #1 - Runners will START on the main park road and complete and out-and-back loop. 

Leg #2 - participants will complete the same bike course as triathlon. See info below. 

Leg #3 - participants will complete the same run course as triathlon. See info below. 
 

SWIM START AND COURSE

Please be at the swim start by 7:45 AM for a final pre-race briefing. This race will use a mass start format whereas swimmers will stage under the inflatable arch and then run/walk into the water to being the swim leg (note that this type of start is different than past years, no in-water start). If you are not a strong swimmer, we recommend that you start to the side or near the back of your wave. Swimming during non-race days is not permitted. 

 

Required Distances

Sprint Race – 750 Meter Swim (one loop)

Olympic Race – 1500 Meter Swim (two loops)

BIKE COURSE 

Please see the bike course map for your race. If you are doing the Olympic race, you will do a second loop at the intersection of Hollow Run Rd and Ida Rd. If you are doing the Sprint, you will do only one loop and continue on the bike course. The course will be marked with signs at all the turns. Volunteers will point you in the direction of your turn. Even though there will be police officers and sheriff’s deputies on the course for your safety, the course is still open to traffic—please BE ALERT and BE CAREFUL! We recommend that you pre-ride or pre-drive the course prior to race day. Knowing the course is YOUR responsibility. There are no aid stations on the bike course.

Sprint Race - Bike ONE loop - 16.5 mi

Olympic Race -Bike TWO loops - 25.5 mi

RUN COURSE 

Please see the run course map and venue map for your race. The run course is on paved road. Standard running shoes are appropriate. Aid stations will be located at the start of the run and at mile 1.5 on the loop. 

If you are doing the Olympic distance, you will complete a 2x out and back run course . If you are doing the Sprint, you will be doing a single out and back course. Runners should run on the left side of the road at all times. The run course will have limited vehicle traffic. Volunteers will be on the course to direct runners. Please stay alert and remain aware of your surroundings!

Triathlon Sprint Race- Run ONE loop - 3.1 mi

Triathlon Olympic Race- Run TWO loops - 6.2 mi

COURSE CUT OFF TIMES 

Olympic race, has a cut-off time of: 1:30 pm

Sprint race, has a cut off time of: 12:00 pm

Finishing the race after the course cutoff time is at the discretion of each athlete, but race support will no longer be provided and the event holds no responsibility for athlete safety after this point.
